If you want to Go Bush, this is the Safari for you

The 'Breakaway' is the ultimate 5 day 4WD Central Australia adventure tour. As would be expected, we'll tour Uluru (tour Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Watarrka (Kings Canyon), Palm Valley and the West MacDonnell Ranges. More importantly, we'll also get to truly experience the outback in an authentic way by really going 'wayoutback'; bush camping at remote campsites, driving a bush track through an old outback cattle station affording sensational views of the West MacDonnell Ranges and, visiting the Oak Valley Aboriginal Community.

Indigenous Experiences Not to be Missed

The Oak Valley Aboriginal Community is an inspirational Aboriginal owned and operated tour business and community. The community boasts an olive and grape plantation, Aboriginal rock carvings and paintings and an ancient fossil field, all set in remote pristine desert country. You can learn about ancient myths and stories of their land, bush tucker, spear and boomerang throwing.

This year we are introducing two new opportunities to experience and learn directly from the indigenous land owners of Central Australia. While at Uluru you can go on the Aboriginal Guided Kuniya Walk+ where you will learn a great deal from Anangu about their mythological stories tied to Uluru and the intimate relationship they have with it.

After our walk at Watarrka we visit Lilla Aboriginal Community for lunch, the traditional home of the Luritja people. After lunch you will be invited to join Sadie Williams on a one hour guided Willy Wagtail walk+ where you’ll get to hear stories of Lilla, view a sacred women’s area, hear about bush tucker and get a demonstration into the use of various artifacts.

+ Cost additional to Wayoutback tour.

A Legacy to the Largest Landowner in the World

On our way from Oak Valley we travel through Owen Springs Reserve which was the first cattle station in this area. It was previously owned by Sydney Kidman who was, until his passing, the largest landowner in the world when not including governments or monarchy. We 4-wheel drive through Owen Springs, steadily climbing to a plateau which then opens out to the most breathtaking vista of the country below and West MacDonnell Ranges in the distance.

The Benefit of some of the Best Guides in the Business

Our experienced tour guides have all the required bush skills to keep you safe and comfortable. They are among the best in Central Australia because of their enthusiasm and ability to bring people together to have the best time. This is backed up with extensive local knowledge of land, the local Aboriginal people (Anangu) and European history.

Note: Due to the adventurous nature of our safaris, unpredictable weather / road conditions and long travel times, Wayoutback strongly recommends travellers take out Travel Insurance including Cancellation Cover.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Lunch, Dinner)

After picking you up from your accommodation in Alice Springs bright and early at 5.45am, there's time for introductions and a chat while we finalise ticketing and hit the road for five fantastic days of adventure and fun.

The first part of the day is spent driving to Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park with a few stops along the way for refreshments, a camel ride or a chance to purchase some Aboriginal paintings or artifacts.  We break for lunch at our bush camp, situated amongst desert oak trees at the base of a large sand dune within Ayers Rock Resort.

The afternoon is devoted to enjoying the sites of Uluru, including a full base walk, a chance to climb or if you wish you can join the Aboriginal guided Kuniya walk +. We’ll also visit the Cultural Centre where you can learn about the Tjukurpa (Aboriginal law / religion).

It's then time to view the magnificent sunset on Uluru accompanied with a glass or two of sparkling wine before returning to the campsite for a delicious meal, a couple of drinks and time to sit back to contemplate the day's events.

Day 2 (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

After watching the sunrise over Uluru and Kata Tjuta from a lookout close to our campsite, it's breakfast and off to Kata Tjuta for a 7km hike through the magnificent "Valley of the Winds". After a leisurely lunch and a stop at the Resort for fuel and supplies, we head to Curtin Springs Cattle Station.

Arriving in mid afternoon, we stop at a typical working cattle station before we travel to Kings Creek Station for our second nights bush camp. Our campsite at Kings Creek is miles from the crowds, which is where the feeling of Wayoutback really starts to take hold.  After a campfire dinner it's time to kick back and be mesmerised by the millions of stars on display.

Day 3 (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

It's a leisurely start to the day before we head off to Watarrka (Kings Canyon) for a 6km walk through the towering walls, crevices and plateaus of Watarrka.  We'll visit the Amphitheatre and the Lost City as well as taking time for a cool refreshing swim in the tranquil "Garden of Eden" if you wish.

Adjacent to Watarrka lies an Aboriginal Community called Lilla where we stop for lunch and a break at a lovely picnic area. After lunch one of the Luritja traditional owners, Sadie Williams (or one of her family), will stop by to take you on a one hour Willy Wagtail guided walk+ (optional).

After Lilla we’re off to 4-wheel drive across the Ernest Giles Road, where you’ll be shaken but not stirred! We now cross the famous Hugh River Stock Route on our way to Oak Valley Aboriginal Community where you can relax and enjoy the evening joined by one of our Aboriginal Hosts who will share a few tales over the campfire set in beautiful surroundings.

Day 4 (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Morning is at its best just as the sun starts to rise followed with a hearty breakfast and a fresh pot of coffee. We now spend the morning checking out the sights of Oak Valley including Rock Paintings and carvings with your Aboriginal Host. Departing the area, we head back along the Hugh River Stock Route taking a short cut across Owen Springs Reserve cutting into the West MacDonnell Ranges. Stopping at Ormiston Gorge we will hike the "Ghost Gum Walk" and take a swim in the beautiful surrounding rock pools for those keen. After a visit to Glen Helen later in the day we then stop at our next bush camp for another night under our magnificent southern stars!

Day 5 (Breakfast, Lunch)

After breaking camp we head off around Namatjira Drive stopping at Tyler's Pass to view Gosse Bluff (comet crater) along the way.  From this point it's on towards Hermannsburg, an Historic Lutheran Mission established in 1877.  On arrival at Hermannsburg we'll visit the heritage precinct where you can explore the historic buildings and grounds+.

Departing Hermannsburg we lock in the hubs and 4-wheel drive into Palm Valley.  After lunch we'll go for a hike through this picturesque valley discovering some of its hidden treasures.  After our hike it's back into the vehicle and off home to Alice Springs. We'll have you back in Alice early evening and meet later for a few more quiet drinks and to farewell new found friends.

+ Cost additional to Wayoutback fare. If visiting Standley Chasm or the Precinct at Hermannsburg, entry fee not included in fare.

Itinerary may change due to seasonal changes, operational logistics and accessibility.
